On November 4, Spokane Valley lit up with vibrant colors, music, and cultural festivities for the annual Diwali Festival, hosted by Spokane United We Stand. This cherished celebration brought together people from diverse backgrounds to embrace Diwali’s themes of light, renewal, and unity. But beyond the cultural showcase, this year’s event highlighted individuals whose dedication to community service has significantly impacted the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities in Spokane. Those includes AHANA’s Technical Advisors, Ana and Huijen.
Recognizing Exemplary Service
Both Ana and Huijen, who serve as Technical Advisors, were honored for their outstanding contributions to the community. The ANHPI (Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander) Movers and Shakers Award acknowledged not only their professional expertise but also their tireless advocacy, leadership, and support for various causes that uplift marginalized communities. Joining them is Devika Gates, AHANA’s secretary and Chief Executive Director of Ancillary Analytical Services, a key figure in the Indian community.
Ana Caldwell, who is of Filipino descent, is widely known in the Spokane area for her work serving as the President of Filipino American Association of the Inland Empire. Through her work, she fosters a sense of belonging and growth that transcends cultural barriers, encouraging people to take pride in their identities and to connect through culture. In addition, she provides one-on-one technical assistance to multi-ethnic business owners seeking to start, grow, or expand their businesses.
Huijen Fan, of Chinese descent, has likewise been a steadfast supporter of the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. As a Technical Advisor, Huijen has dedicated her career to bridging technological gaps, ensuring that everyone has access to essential digital resources and education. His efforts have empowered many community members, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in a digital world and inspiring them to pursue further growth.
A Celebration of Diversity and Unity
The Diwali Festival provided the perfect setting to honor these two remarkable individuals. Attendees enjoyed an array of traditional dances, and delicious Indian food from local businesses of Spokane. The air was filled with the festive spirit of Diwali, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and the beauty of shared cultural experiences.
Spokane United We Stand’s commitment to honoring those who contribute positively to their communities has been a cornerstone of this annual event. This year, as we celebrated Diwali, we were reminded of the importance of service, dedication, and inclusivity that people like Ana and Huijen embody.
Congratulations to Ana Caldwell and Huijen Fan for this well-deserved recognition. Their awards serve as a reminder of the power of community service, the strength found in diversity, and the profound difference that individuals can make when they dedicate themselves to helping others.
As we carry the spirit of Diwali forward, may we all be inspired to contribute to our communities and celebrate the rich diversity that defines us.
